New Connections — A Brand New Station

Design-build of a new 100,000 SF sustainably designed Metrorail station on WMATA's Yellow and Blue lines. Situated between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and the City of Alexandria along a 3.1-mile stretch of Metrorail line that previously did not have a station, the new station is key to catalyzing the development of the surrounding area into a walkable urban hub.

Bordered on one side by wetlands and by Amtrak and CSX rail tracks on the other, the project required innovative construction approaches in a constrained corridor. The team navigated complex coordination with multiple stakeholders including WMATA, Amtrak, CSX, the City of Alexandria, and federal agencies.

The Challenge

Building a new Metrorail station in a tight corridor bordered by environmentally sensitive wetlands, active Amtrak and CSX rail lines, and a congested urban environment. The project required maintaining full Metrorail service throughout construction while coordinating with multiple freight and passenger rail operators.

The Solution

Halmar's design-build team developed innovative construction sequences and phasing plans that minimized disruption to existing rail service. Sustainable design features were integrated from the earliest stages, leading to the station's LEED Gold certification — one of the first for a new-build transit station globally.

The Results

The Potomac Yard Metrorail Station has become a catalyst for the transformation of the surrounding area into a vibrant, walkable urban neighborhood. The station includes three pedestrian and bicycle bridges and two pavilions, seamlessly connecting the community to the regional transit network.
